The State

The state of Ohio is located in the Midwestern region of the country and is one of the most populous with almost 12 million citizens. The name of the state was derived from the Iroquoian for ‘great water’ and the state itself was initially part of the Northwest Territory before being admitted to the Union in 1803 as the 17th state.

The state is bordered on its northern side by Lake Erie and Pennsylvania on the east. To the northwest lies Michigan and is bounded on the south by West Virginia and Kentucky. By virtue of its strategic location and geography, Ohio is in a good position for economic growth and prosperity and over the years, the state has demonstrated this in no small terms.

But, for ease of description, the state has been classified into the Central Lowlands and the Appalachian Plateaus. Ohio has a humid continental climate and the winters can be moderate while the summers are usually hot and wet in various parts of the state. Columbus is the capital and it also doubles as the largest city in the state. Apart from agriculture, coal mining is also a very important economic activity.

The People

The state of Ohio is one of the most populous in the country. Almost 90% of the state’s residents are Whites and the largest ancestry groups are the Germans, Irish, Polish, English and Italian. Other ethnic groups in the state include the Blacks (African Americans), Asians and Native Americans.

In terms of religion, more than three-quarters of the Buckeyes are Christians with the Protestant Church and Roman Catholic Church being the largest denominations. Others are Muslims, Jews, Mormons and Buddhists. Almost a fifth of the population are irreligious, agnostic or atheistic.

Eating

However, if you are the extroverted type and you attend many of the parties and celebrations in Ohio, you are most likely going to come across a typical dish called Hanky Pankies. This delicious meal is made from sausage, sauce and cheese. Another meal that you must taste when in the state is fried potato and walleye.

If you are lucky to have a German host, you will be treated to deliciously tasty sauerkraut balls and you can always ask for perch stew. In the cities of Cleveland and Cincinnati, there are various eateries and restaurants where you can enjoy nice dishes with friends and families.

Drinking

Your dining in the state of Ohio is not complete without having a nice drink. The good thing is that the state has more than enough drinks to offer, your taste notwithstanding. For those are interested in beers, there are local and international brands in the state.

There are various breweries churning out perfect lagers and smooth ales. Fine wines from the region and beyond are also available in various inns, bars and restaurants. On a lighter note, you can go for soft drinks, yoghurt and fruit juices.
