The Country

The United States Virgin Islands is unique in the sense that it is a territory of the United States of America but it has an unincorporated status. Located in the eastern portion of the Greater Antilles and is not too far from Puerto Rico, a state in free association with the United States. The United States Virgin Islands is an archipelago of three large islands and around 50 smaller ones (islets). In addition to these, there are some cays scattered around too. Many of these geographical formations do not have any permanent residents. Charlotte Amalie (which is also the largest settlement) is the capital city and is located on Saint Thomas Island. Of all the islands, the largest in area is Saint Croix (while Saint John is the smallest) and you will be impressed with the encircling coral reefs. With a soothing tropical climate and beautiful vegetation, it comes as little surprise that many tourists always include the United States Virgin Islands in their itinerary.

The People

It was more of a pleasant surprise to discover that around four-fifths of the islanders had African roots or a mixed heritage. Those from the neighboring Spanish communities (Latin American nations) and North America form the other ethnolinguistic communities. In various parts of the United States Virgin Islands, English is widely spoken and in other communities, you will hear French, Spanish and Creole. Many of the islanders are engaged in tourism, manufacturing and fishing, contributing to the local economy.
