The State

Shaped like a parallelogram, the state of Tennessee was admitted into the Union as the 16th state in 1796. The state has a fascinating history: it was the very last state to break off from the Union to team up with the Confederate Forces.

In addition, it was the first state to be readmitted into the Union following the end of the American Civil War. Many of the decisive battles of the Civil War were fought in the state.

However, Tennessee shares borders with the following states: Kentucky and Virginia to the north and Alabama, Georgia and Massachusetts to the south. The states of Missouri and Arkansas are to the west, North Carolina lies to the east. This implies that Tennessee shares borders with eight different states!

Moreover, some scholars believe that the name of the state was coined from the word ‘tanasi’ which is a word used by the Cherokee Indians to describe a small settlement by the river. The state has a humid subtropical climate and that translates to hot and wet summers although winters are moderate and cool. In 1996, the state celebrated its bicentennial and it was awesome.

The People

An overwhelming proportion of the Tennesseans (as residents are called) are Whites (who number more than 80%). Subsequently, many of the Whites have English, Scottish or Irish ancestries. Other ethnic groups in the state include the Blacks (African Americans), American Indians (or Native Indians), Asians and Native Hawaiians (and other Pacific Islanders).

The predominant religion in the state is Christianity and the largest affiliations are those with the Baptist Church, Methodist Church, Roman Catholic Church, Presbyterian and the Church of Christ. There is a tiny population of Muslims and adherents of other faiths in the state.
