Country
Slovakia shares strong links with the Czech Republic with which it formed one-half of Czechoslovakia.
They were first united with the Czech lands in 1918. After a brief golden period in the 1920s, they were occupied by Germany for the entire WWII. In 1945, they again became part of Czechoslovakia, but many must have regretted it when the Communists took over in 1948.
After the breakdown of Communism in 1989, they again became an independent country. Today Slovakia is one of Europe’s fastest growing economies.
People
The most famous Slovakian is Tomas Masaryk, the first President and founder of Czechoslovakia.
The most popular figure, however, is Juraj Janosik. He is the Slovakian Robin Hood and like the English legend, the subject of many books and films.
Of course, the constant retelling of his story has exaggerated his heroics, but in 2009, a Slovakian director released a film called Janosik- the True Story. Of course, how true it is, is still upto debate.
Enviro Film Festival
Taking place in four Slovakian towns- Banksa Bystrica, Zvolen, Banksa Stavnica and Kreminca, this film festival hands out awards to the best environmental films and television programs. It takes place annually in May for six days.
Bratislava Music Festival
This classical music festival takes place in the capital between September and October.
Like so many central European countries, Slovakia has a long tradition in classical music, producing such brilliant composers as Albrecht and Benes, so expect high-class venues such as the Reduta Palace and the Slovak Philharmonic.
This is the only Slovak festival that is a member of the European Festivals Association.
Slovak National Theater
The capital of Bratislava is home to Slovak’s national Theater. It consists of three ensembles- opera, ballet and theater. Its Neo-Renaissance building was built in the 1920s just two years after the uniting of Slovakia and Czech Republic. Today, all-year round, it holds performances in ballet, opera. It is one of Slovakia’s foremost cultural institutions.
