The State

Admitted into the Union in 1889 as the 39th state, North Dakota is a land of incomparable beauty. You will be treated to a most enchanting scenery: sprawling farms, clear blue skies and majestic mountains.

Located in the Midwest, the state is bordered on the north by Canada and there is Montana to the west. On the east, there is Minnesota while South Dakota lies to the south. Originally part of the Dakota Territory (which included South Dakota, Washington and Montana), the state is one where agriculture is an important economic activity and there is low population density.

The agricultural nature of the state can be attributed to its geography –it is located in the plains region of the country where agriculture is the predominant occupation. Moreover, the first settlers of the land were the Dakota people (or Sioux Indians) and that is where the name ‘Dakota’ was derived from. The state has a continental climate and that manifests as cold winters and hot summers.

However, the days are usually warm and nights are cool during summers. One peculiar geographical formation in the state is the landscape called the Badlands –a mix of breath-taking cliffs, valleys and buttes.

The People

Just as is the pattern in many of the other states in the country, the first people to settle in the Dakota Territory were tribes of the Native Americans like the Cree, Chipewa, Teton Sioux and Mandan.

But, today, the American Indians form a minority in the state and most North Dakotans now have European ancestries having roots in nations such as Germany, Norway, Sweden, United Kingdom, Russia and France. However, some of the other ethnic groups include the Native Americans, Hispanics, African Americans, Asians and Pacific Islanders. A vast majority of the residents are Christians.

Eating

Although North Dakota is one of the most sparsely populated state in the country, you will forget this when you start eating. But, there are fantastic dishes in the state and as expected, the meals are influenced by the culture of the residents, especially those with Germans and Norwegian roots.

In the state, German-oriented dishes like sausage, kuchen and knoefla. However, there are also some other dishes that have the typical Scandinavian taste. Certainly, a very good example of this is the krumkake and potato dumplings.

However, it is very interesting to know that one of the most spectacular food festivals that I have attended was the Norsk Hostfest in the state and this is one of the largest Scandinavian food festivals on the planet.

Drinking

There are various brands of beers and wines in the state and you can always enjoy yourself. However, the laws of the state dictate that before you can drink, you need to be at least 21 years. But, you can also enjoy fresh fruit juices and soft drinks with North Dakota souvenirs.
