The State

Of all the states, there is one that I find more electrifying than all others combined and that is none other than New York. Located in the northeastern part of the country, the state of New York contains the most populous city in the country, which is none other than the legendary New York City.

Just two states (California and Texas) have more people. Bordered on the east by Massachusetts, Connecticut and Vermont (New England states), the state shares borders with Pennsylvania and New Jersey to the south. To the north of the state lies Ontario and Quebec, both of which are provinces of Canada. Interestingly, this spectacular state is also one of the original 13 states that formed the foundation for what is now the United States.

A state of great achievements, New York can be regarded as the center of the nation’s immigration as many pouring from all over the globe in search of better opportunities stream in on a daily basis. One fantastic thing I discovered is that the capital of the state is actually Albany and not the vastly more popular New York City.

The People

The earliest settlers of the area that is now New York were the American Indian tribes (especially the Lenape and Iroquois) but the equation has changed radically and in the 21st century, the state is thoroughly multicultural as there is a noticeable representation of all the continents in the state.

The state is home to a blend of diverse peoples, and some of these are the Blacks, Whites (especially those with English, Irish and German ancestry), Asians, Hispanics (Latinos) and French Canadians (Quebec is just across the border). The predominant religion is Christianity and there is a representation of other faiths too.

Eating

I find New York State so diverse and varied that it is somewhat difficult to pinpoint a typically local dish. The meal depends on the area or community you visit. That said, I have to mention some of the mouth-watering dishes I took in the state.

I started my culinary trip in a restaurant in Manhattan with New York-style pizza and in the afternoon, I finished it with strip steak and egg cream. When it comes to food, you can find all that you desire. There are some popular American dishes that originated in the city. These include Delmonico steak, black and white cookie, egg cream and Manhattan clam chowder.

What I love most about the state of New York is the large number of street vendors and you do not have to start looking for eateries and restaurants. From these vendors, you can enjoy hamburgers, stromboli, shawarma, fried chicken, falafel and shish kebab. After all, this is the Empire State.

Drinking

The state of New York will not disappoint you when it comes to what to drink. From banana-flavored ice cream to the finest Italian wines, your throat will always be wet. In a state that is as diverse as New York, you get drinks from all over the globe.

Sports

When it comes to sports, I have not seen a state in the country that will beat New York State. The state is home to legendary sports teams like the New York Giants, New York Jets and the New York Yankees. As expected, the most popular sports in the state include baseball, basketball, golf, soccer, rugby, hockey and racing.

New York souvenirs

New York, with its multitude of iconic symbols and landmarks, has always been and remains one of the most popular places to purchase souvenirs. Among the many options of New York-themed souvenirs, shot glasses are considered particularly popular and intriguing items for collecting or gifting.
