The State

Sited in the Great Plains of the United States, Nebraska is one state that is known for being one of the most important centers for agriculture.

The state is bounded on the north by the state of South Dakota, Iowa, Missouri and the Missouri River on the east and has the states of Colorado and Wyoming flanking it to the west. To the south, the state of Nebraska is bounded by Kansas.

The state was admitted to the Union in 1867 as the 37th state in the country. In geographical terms, the state can be divided into two parts and these include the Till Plains of the Central Lowlands and of course, the Great Plains which cover the western half of the state.

Nebraska is also drained by various hydrographic features and these include the Platte River, Republican River, Big Blue River, Loup River and the Elkhorn River.

It is landlocked by states that are bordered by landlocked states themselves! Geographers refer to this rare phenomenon as ‘triple landlocking’. However, fortunately for the Nebraskans, the state is well-drained by rivers and there is no need to suffer for lacking direct access to the ocean.

The People

The original settlers of the area that is now Nebraska are the American Indian tribes like the Omaha, Pawnee and the Otoe. However, Whites make up more than 90% of the population and many of them have German, English, Swedish and Irish ancestries.

Apart from the Whites, the other Nebraskans are Hispanics (Latinos from Mexico and Latin America states), Blacks (African Americans), American Indians, Asians and Native Hawaiians/Pacific Islanders. However, around 90% of the citizens are Christians with the Roman Catholic Church being the largest denomination.
