The State

Massachusetts is a fascinating state. It is one of the four states in the United States that have been designated as a Commonwealth. The state (or Commonwealth) is bounded by New Hampshire and Vermont to the north while the legendary New York lies to its west.

To the south of the state lies Connecticut and the tiniest of all, Rhode Island. The state was admitted to the Union in 1788 as the sixth state and it is also interesting to know that Massachusetts is one of the original 13 colonies that laid the foundation for the world’s sole superpower.

Boston is its largest city and is also the capital city. This city is famed for being the location of some of the most historic events in the United States and the most well-known of these are the Boston Tea Party and the Stamp Act riots.

The People

As it is the case in many of the other states in the country, Massachusetts was initially settled by the Native American tribes and these included the Pocomtuc, Wampanoag and the Narrangasett.

Today, with a population of almost seven million, Massachusetts is one of the most densely populated states in the country and is peopled by residents with diverse backgrounds.

The Whites (not Latinos) make up about three-fourths of the population and the other groups in the country include the Hispanics (Latinos from Mexico and other nations in Latin America), Asians, Blacks (African Americans) and the original inhabitants of the area, the American Indians.

Places To Visit

If you say that Massachusetts is an enchanting state, you will not be far from the truth but the best thing is to tour the state and see things for yourself. Popular sites include the Big Dig, the Old Ship Church (the oldest church in the United States), Cape Cod Bay and of course, Harvard University!

Food in Massachusetts

Anytime I hear the word ‘Massachusetts’ mentioned, my mind will flash back to some of the most delightful dishes I have ever had while touring the United States.

This state is the ultimate for whoever is interested in dining out and devouring the loveliest of meals. In the Bay State, there are some local dishes that you must take especially with your friends. These include the fabled Boston cream pie, clam cake, Cape Cod chips and clam chowder.

Drinking in Massachusetts

For those interested in guzzling some booze, you need to familiarize yourself with the alcohol laws of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.

For example, you may not purchase alcohol if you are less than 21 years (Canada is 19!) and you should not buy from someone below the same age limit. In spite of all the laws, getting drinks are not difficult especially for adults.

Sports in Massachusetts

For a state that gave the world the sports of volleyball and basketball, one should not be too surprised to learn that sporting events are still very popular in the state. Other sports in the state include football, rowing, lacrosse and tennis.

Interesting Facts About Massachusetts

The state is home to the prestigious Harvard University.
The population density of the state is one of the highest in the country.
Maine was once part of the state.
Massachusetts is one of the largest producers of cranberries in the country.
