The Country

Also called the Somers Isles or the Bermudas, Bermuda is an overseas territory of the United Kingdom. It is situated off the eastern coastline of the United States in the northern half of the Atlantic Ocean and is not too far from the western portion of the famed Sargasso Sea. Unlike what most of us think about the territory, Bermuda is not a single entity but an archipelago made up of over 180 islands. Of these islands, the largest is aptly named Bermuda and is sometimes referred to as the Main Island. Hamilton is the capital of the tiny territory. Although small, the territory’s economy is quite impressive, buoyed by profits from the booming tourism industry and offshore banking. Historical accounts show that the territory was initially uninhabited and the British were the first to settle there.

The People

Over three-fifths of the residents of Bermuda are Blacks (descendants of slaves shipped from Africa during the infamous Transatlantic Slave Trade). Apart from those with African roots, others include the Whites and indigenous tribes. There is also a considerable number of expatriates mainly fromWestern Europe and Asia. The most widely spoken language is English while Portuguese is used to a lesser degree.

Eating and Drinking

Food in Bermuda is best described as pure bliss! Really spectacular in appearance and superb in taste, Bermudian dishes are simply second to none. If you have a tongue that craves for the exotic, this is the place for you as you can try out the exquisite dried mullet roe which is prepared using mullet roe and innards. You can decide to top that with a mug of cedar beer. Fish chowder is also another spicy Bermudian preparation that you must enjoy before leaving the Isle of Devils. Beers and wines are available.

Known for its seductive pink beaches and enchantingly blue waters, Bermuda is no doubt the ideal tourist destination. If you are an ardent lover of snorkelling and scuab diving, then you have found a home in Bermuda. There are also countless places and sites of attraction to be visited and these include the legendary Bermuda Aquarium, Museum and Zoo, the heavenly Crystal Caves and the wondrous Botanical Gardens. Cricket, football, sailing, swimming, horseracing and golf are some of the most widely-enjoyed sports in the territory.
