The State

The north-central state derived its name from the Ojibwe word, signifying ‘place of the beaver.’ This term also characterizes the Wisconsin River, after which the state was named. Commonly referred to as the Badger State, Wisconsin shares borders with Lake Superior to the north, Lake Michigan to the east, Illinois to the south, and Minnesota and Iowa to the west.

Admitted into the Union as the 30th state in 1848, Wisconsin has consistently been a significant center for agriculture in the country. It serves as a leader in various aspects of food production, with large tracts of land cultivated primarily for corn, which is the major crop.

Wisconsin is among the largest producers of oats, sweet corn, beets, green peas, spear mint, red kidney beans, and cranberries. Renowned for its dairy industry, the state is a major producer of milk and is widely acclaimed for its diverse and high-quality cheese varieties. The climate in Wisconsin is classified as humid continental, characterized by long, cold winters and brief but warm summers. The capital of the state is Madison, while Milwaukee holds the distinction of being the largest city.

The People

Wisconsin stands out as a highly heterogeneous state among the United States. The residents, with more than 90% being White, have diverse ancestries, including English, Scandinavian, German, Belgian, and Italian roots. Additionally, other ethnic groups present in the state comprise African Americans (Blacks), Asians, American Indians (Native Americans), Native Hawaiians, and other Pacific Islanders.

Christianity is the predominant religion in the state, with the largest denominations including the Protestant Lutheran, Methodist, and Baptist Churches, along with the Roman Catholic Church.

Eating in Wisconsin

Eating in the state of Wisconsin means indulging in some of the finest meals in America. I will always remember the state as a dairy paradise, producing the very best types of cheese in the Badger State. Among all the states I have toured in the United States, I find Wisconsin the most interesting when it comes to what I call ‘dairy wonder.’

You can explore the delicious fried cheese curds paired with some refreshing fruit juice. In addition to the dairy products, there is a local delicacy made from perch, fried until dry. This sumptuous fried fish is both refreshing and tasty. In communities predominantly occupied by Danes, you’ll be treated to the kingly Danish kringle. In other communities, don’t miss out on German potato salads, hamburgers, summer sausage, chicken paprikash, sauerbraten, and beer cheese soup. These are just a few of the delightful dishes awaiting you in Wisconsin.

The state is renowned for producing superb beers and fine brandy. It offers exquisite wines, and purchasing soft drinks is readily accessible.
