The Island

Also called the Wake Atoll, the Wake Island is a coral atoll that lies to the north of the Marshall Islands. Located in the North Pacific, it is a territory of the United States even if it has the status of unincorporated and unorganized. The administration of the island is carried out by the Office of Insular Affairs, a unit of the US Department of the Interior. Although called an island, Wake Island is actually an atoll made up of three islands and a reef. 24 hours ahead of the states of the United States, Wake Island lies between Guam and the state of Hawaii. The uninhabited Bokak Atoll is the closest land.

Places To Visit

Because Wake Island is not the ideal tourist destination, the only places travelers may be able to see or tour are more of the military installations, access to which is usually restricted. However, there are fantastic shark-free lagoons and splendid coral rocks too!

You can enjoy some amazing American and Pacific meals in the dining facility located at the military base. You can also come along with your own bag of snacks and pastries.

Drinking

You can sample various drinks at the Drifter’s Reef, which is the only official bar on the island. It has been around for quite a while, catering to the needs of tourists and visitors.

-There are just a handful of people living on the island, about 150.
-In the year 2009, under the administration of President George Bush, the island was added as part of the Pacific Remote Islands Marine National Monument.

-Tourists cannot just land on Wake Island because entry on the island is restricted and all activities on it are controlled by the United States Air Force.
-There is also a missile facility operated on the island by the United States Army.
-The Wake Island Airfield has a 3,000-meter long runway.
-There are no permanent residents on the island.
-The island is located on the other side of the International Date Line and for that reason, it is funnily referred to as being in the future.
-There are no sources of fresh water on Wake Island.
-The waters around the island usually have sharks in them but there are shark-free lagoons where you can have a dive and relax.
-You may end up sleeping in the barracks should you visit the island. There are a few other accommodation outlets on the island.
-Wake Island played a very significant role for the United States during the Second World War.
