The State
Officially known as the Commonwealth of Virginia, the state is one of the original 13 states and is named in honor of the Virgin Queen, Elizabeth I of England. The state is bordered by Tennessee and North Carolina to the south, Maryland to the northeast, Kentucky to the west and West Virginia to the northwest.
Of all the states in the United States and above all, Virginia holds the distinction of being the first colony of Britain in the country and is the location of the very first permanent English settlement in the United States.
It is also amazing to know that the neighboring state of West Virginia was once part of Virginia but split in 1863. The Commonwealth of Virginia was admitted into the Union in 1788 as the 10th state and has played a very important role in the evolution of the modern American nation. The state was also the site of many of the most important events of the American Revolution.
The People
More than 60% of Virginians are Whites and this can be seen as a reflection of the state’s history. The other groups include the Blacks, Latinos (or Hispanics), Asians and American Indians. Blacks form around a fifth of the population in the state and that is one of largest in the country. The predominant religion in the state is Christians and many of the residents are Baptists, Methodists and Catholics.
Eating
While in Virginia, the best way to enjoy your day and shake off the boredom is to try some nice dishes and you will surely get a lot of them in the state. For example, you can attend one of the numerous food festivals in the state. These include the fabulous Taste of Arlington; attend the Pork, Peanut, and Pine Festival. In some other parts of Virginia, you will be treated to the delicious maple doughnuts –yummy. For example, one local delicacy that you must also try to taste is cured country ham and you must sample the popular Brunswick stew.

For those who appreciate fine wine, you will definitely fall in love with the Commonwealth of Virginia as it has more than 120 wineries and that means you have more than enough time to sample your favorite vintage wine and for those with a tongue for variety, you have more than enough brands to taste –or sniff! For example, on the booze side, it is also important to state that Virginia has some of the most sophisticated breweries in the country and for those interested in beers, ales and lagers; this is the ideal location for a vacation –or a weekend retreat.
Sports
Football, basketball and baseball are some of the most popular sports in the country. Others include college athletics, softball and volleyball. However, sporting activities in Virginia are not limited to this, the diversity is stunning.

The Commonwealth of Virginia is often referred to as the Mother of Presidents and that is as a result of the fact that eight US presidents were born in the state –George Washington, James Madison, James Monroe, Thomas Jefferson, William Henry Harrison, John Tyler, Zachary Taylor, and Woodrow Wilson. Certainly, that is a very interesting fact of history.
