The State

The state of Vermont, also known as the Green Mountain State is one of the New England states located in the northeastern part of the nation and is the smallest landlocked states in the country. Admitted as part of the Union in 1791, the state of Vermont shares borders with New York on the west, New Hampshire on the east and to the south of the state lies Massachusetts.

To the north of the state is Quebec, which is one of the provinces of Canada. Of all the six New England states, Vermont is the only one not to have a coastline on the Atlantic Ocean and its major physical feature are the Green Mountains, which forms an extension of the Appalachian Mountains. The state has a humid continental climate and that means wet summers and cold winters.

Initially called the Republic of New Connecticut, the name ‘Vermont’ was adopted in 1777. The state is known for its sophisticated printing industries and for having some of the largest granite pits on the planet.

The People

Among all the New England states, Vermont has the smallest population. However, over 95% of Vermonters are Whites, with many having roots in French (or French Canadian), German, English, Irish, Italian, Scottish, Russian, Swedish, and Dutch ancestry.

A significant number of individuals with French Canadian ancestry are concentrated in the northern parts of the state, close to the Canadian province of Quebec, known for its large French population. Other ethnic groups present in the state include Blacks (African Americans), American Indians (Native Americans), Asians, and Native Hawaiians (and other Pacific Islanders).

Christianity serves as the major religion in the state, with the largest denominations being the Protestant and Roman Catholic Church. Additionally, other faiths such as Islam and Buddhism also have a considerable representation in the state.

Eating

Staying in Vermont allows access to some of the best American dishes. Throughout my vacation in the state, I thoroughly satisfied my culinary curiosity by indulging in many meals prepared and enjoyed by Vermonters. These meals are noteworthy for their sheer diversity, and it is crucial that I mention some of these foods: dilly beans, corn chowder, baked beans, apple butter, pancakes, oyster crackers, and oatmeal. Additionally, for those with a taste for the exotic, I highly recommend trying the rhubarb pie – it’s quite tasty and delicious.

Drinking

Interestingly, one of the most popular drinks in the state has its origins in Canada and as you might have guessed, it is maple syrup. The drink is so popular that every April, there is a three-day festival celebrating the syrup. Therefore, if you do not attend the Vermont Maple Festival, your visit to the state is not complete.

For those interested in strong booze for example, the state is home to a number of breweries that produce high-quality liquors. It is also interesting to know that these breweries are specialists when it comes to producing nice lagers and ales. You will also find Vermont wines to be refreshing.

Sports

The following sports are known to be the most popular in the state:
Baseball
Basketball
Football
Soccer
Snowboarding
