Switzerland or the Swiss Confederation consists of 26 cantons with distinct German, French or Italian cultures, dialects and customs. The Swiss Confederation has a long history of neutrality and has not been in a state of war since 1815. Switzerland is as famous for neutrality as it is for its banking secrecy laws. For travelers Switzerland offers beautiful landscapes framed by mountains, delicious chocolate and cheese and variety of experiences well beyond its size.
Swiss mentality is essentially a Western European one with a few unusual traits. While precision and punctuality are highly valued across Europe, Swiss take it to a new level. Swiss watches are famous throughout the world for this exact characteristic.
Swiss have also contributed to self-search and self-understanding of many by producing and education a very influential and famous psychiatrist. Jung’s analysis of dreams has a long running influence both psychiatry and film making.
He was also famous for recommending spirituality as a cure for alcoholism, and he is considered to have had an indirect role in Alcoholics Anonymous
The most delightful experience for me was visiting Gruyeres and getting a cheese making tour. Gruyere is a cheese that blends sweet and salty flavors and becomes more complex with age.
The technique of cheese making has not changed in years and it can take up to a year to produce this tasty treat. Of course, one can’t visit Gruyeres and not to indulge in actual eating! I sat down in one of the restaurant to enjoy Raclette.
Raclette refers to three things: type of cheese, meal and cooking device. Every table was equipped with Raclette, machine that melts the Raclette cheese. Diners scrape it off to put on top of boiled potatoes, gherkins, pickled onions and prosciutto.
The meal is not for cholesterol conscious ones, but it is warms heart and soul on a cold winter day.
François-Louis Cailler (1796 – 1852) established the oldest chocolate factory still in use in Switzerland. It is near Vevey. He is credited with smoothness that we associate with chocolate as well as molding the very first chocolate bar.
Swiss celebrate their contribution to the world of deserts by consuming 22 lbs of chocolate per year.
Most popular drink in Switzerland is wine and it has been for centuries. French diplomat Daniel L’Ermite wrote in 1601 “Drinking is their passion, their delight, their biggest expense.
They drink together; they bargain together while drinking and even conclude the most important business [when drinking].” To this day, Swiss consume ~270 million liters of wine per year, but this figure has been on a declining trend.
Moreover, Switzerland, with its several iconic symbols and landmarks, has always been and remains one of the most popular places to purchase souvenirs.
