The Country

A constituent of the Netherlands Antilles, Sint Eustatius (sometimes referred to as Statia) is home to two volcanoes. However, there is no need for panic as these volcanoes have been classified as extinct.

It is located to the south of Sint Maarten and to the southeast of Saba. Sint Eustatius is to the northwest of Saint Kitts and Nevis and to the southeast of the Virgin Islands. Once part of the Netherlands Antilles, Sint Eustatius acquired the status of a special municipality of the Netherlands very recently (in 2010).

The People

With a population of just about 3,500, Sint Eustatius tiny indeed. The islanders are mainly migrants with descendants from Europe, Africa and this is in addition to some indigenous groups. As a matter of fact, one of the oldest Jewish temples was once sited there.
