The Country

Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia in 1914, eventually leading to the First World War. The German Empire eventually overpowered them, but after the war, they became one of the original members of Yugoslavia.

The breakup of Yugoslavia in 1991, lead to the rise of Slavo Milosevic and period of unrest. The UN eventually put Milosevic on trial for war crimes in 2000 and he died in 2006. Since his death Serbia’s economy seems to have somewhat recovered.

In 2009, they applied for EU membership.

The People

Serbians are the largest ethnic group in Serbia, making up 83% of the population. Serbia’s second largest group is Hungarians, which represent 3.9% of the total population.

Serbia has one of the highest refugee populations in the world, representing a huge 7% of the population, many of them originating from the ex-Yugoslavian countries. Maybe because of this over 300,000 ethnic Serbians left the country during the 1990s.

Today Serbia has one of the oldest populations in the world.

Cinemas

Serbia has a proud cinematic tradition, starting in the 1960s with the cult director Dusan Makavejev. The tradition continued into the 80s and 90s, particularly with the now world-renowned filmmaker Emir Kustirica.

He has won a number of awards for his films, most famously for his film Underground. Legendary Hollywood filmmaker Peter Bogdanovich- the Last Picture Show- also originates from Serbia.

Belgrade

Belgrade is not only the capital of Serbia, but it was also the capital of Yugoslavia and as such is the most impressive of all the cities in the Balkan regions.

In fact, it has been voted one of the premier party cities in Europe with people from the ex-Yugoslavian countries flooding in at the weekends to take advantage of the later opening hours, cheaper drinking and better clubs.

Away from the nightlife, there is still plenty to see. The old bohemian district of Skadarlija for example is both gorgeous and lively with some of the city’s best-known restaurants.
