The People

San Marino’s most famous person is its founder Saint Marinus.

Their tradition states he was a stonemason who fled Rimin due to Christian persecution and found the City of San Marino. Upon his deathbed in 366, he mysteriously told his people that he wanted to leave them free of both men.

Today experts think the people he meant were the Empire and the Papal state. However, San Marino has stayed true to his words and every September 3 they hold a memorial in his memory.

Three Towers Of San Marino

The three towers are a group of towers each sitting on one of Mount Titan’s three peaks that overlook the whole of San Marino.

The first tower is called Guaita. It was built as a prison in the 11th century. The second tower is called the Cesta. Built in the 13th century, it is a now a museum dedicated to Saint Marinus. The third tower, Montale, is the smallest tower and the only one closed to the public.

Cuisine

San Marino has a cuisine very similar to Italian with excellent pizza, pasta and pastries. For example, if you are a fan of Italian food, San Marino is no poor substitute. In fact, they have a better concentration of quality restaurants such as the Hostaria da Lino.

However, they also have their own dishes. Most famous is the cake of the three towers, which is a wafer and chocolate-layered cake. They also produce a number of excellent wines including the Brunetto. Therefore, you can be sure of having an exciting time.

Medieval Days Festival

In July, the San Marino residents turn their city center into a medieval village. For five days shop keepers dress in traditional clothing and you will see people on the streets playing medieval style music and making arts and crafts. Therefore, it is said to be the most popular festival in the republic. However, remember to get our special San Marino shot glass souvenirs.

The Country

Though San Marino is the world’s smallest republic, it still has a very proud tradition. They say their founder, San Marinus, left Croatia for Rimin, but Rimin’s persecutions of Christians lead Marinus to Monte Titano.

It was here he founded the City of San Marino in 301. Since then San Marino has enjoyed long period of independence. But, they were a neutral country during World World II, but they did have a fascist government that reigned from 1923 to 1943.

However, they are famous for having the first Communist party democratically elected into government in 1954, and again in 2006.
