The Country

Located in the Caribbean Sea, the island state of Saint Lucia belongs to the Windward section of the Lesser Antilles. Situated to the south of Martinique and the northeast of Saint Vincent, Saint Lucia has the city of Castries as its seat of administration and the principal port.

The climate of Saint Lucia is classified as tropical maritime and that is one of the reasons why many tourists from various parts of the globe keep trooping to Saint Lucia on a regular basis. Saint Lucia was not to become an independent state until 1979.

The People

As I noticed in some of the other islands of the Caribbean, blacks form the majority in Saint Lucia as far as population is concerned. Apart from those with African roots, there are some other ethnic groups in the nation and these include the descendants of migrants from Europe and the East Indians. There is also a significant population of those with mixed heritage.

As for the spiritual aspect, the predominant religion in Saint Lucia is Christianity with the Roman Catholic Church being the domineering figure. Other Christian denominations exist and the Anglican Church is worth mentioning. The official language is English and is widely understood in various parts of the island. Many of the islanders are into agriculture, fisheries, forestry and of course, tourism to generate revenue for the local economy.

Eating and Drinking

If you want to have a taste of heaven, all you need is to taste a plate of Saint Lucian food. The most popular dish is banana and salt fish and there is no way you will miss this. Refreshing coconut milk is the favorite during meals.

Diving and snorkeling are quite popular on Saint Lucia. For many of the tourists visiting Saint Lucia, it is more of a trip to paradise as there are many tourist havens and recreational centers. In the southern region of the country, various hot springs attract hordes of tourists. Also, for many of the tourists, the primary attention is the Saint Lucian Jazz Festival held every year.
