The State

The state of Oregon was admitted into the Union in 1859 as the 33rd state. The state is incredibly beautiful and is home to some of the finest sites of tourist attraction in the United States. As a tourist, I visited some of the famed places in the state: Crater Lake National Park, Oregon Caves National Monument and the Columbia River Gorge.

Also, classified as one of the Pacific States, Oregon is bordered on the south by California and Nevada and on the north by Washington. On the east of the state lies Idaho while the Pacific Ocean bathes its western coast. The state has arable land and is home to some of the most valuable wooded forests in the country.

These forests have supported the state’s economy as it produces much of the country’s softwood lumber and which is used in the production of paper. The state is also properly drained by a number of rivers and these include the Snake River, Columbia River, Deschutes River and the Willamette River. The capital of the state is Salem although the largest city is Portland.

The People

The vast majority of Oregonians are Whites and they make up almost 90% of the population. However, other ethnic groups in the state include the Blacks (African Americans), Asians, Native Hawaiians (and other Pacific Islanders), American Indians and Hispanics.

The Native Americans stay in reservations and form just about 1% of the population. The major religion in the state of Oregon is Christianity and many follow the Roman Catholic Church, which is the largest denomination in the state.

The other important churches are Protestant and include the Lutherans, Baptists, Methodists and Presbyterians.

Eating

Staying in Oregon means you are going to enjoy some of the most delicious meals in the United States. Talking about the Beaver State is definitely not complete without talking about its fantastic dishes.

From spicy soups to beef dish and soft cheese, Oregon offers you the very best of meals. With the Pacific Ocean just a stone throw away, the state of Oregon is a place for superb dishes made from seafood.

Thus, at any of the many restaurants and eateries, you can order for grilled scallops, steamed lobsters (with spices) and smoked oysters. And before I forget, the Dungeness crabs of Oregon are simply the best. I also tried out an amazing combination –rice and fresh fish stew. Oregon is also known for its very big and delicious berries –especially blueberries, strawberries and marionberries.

Drinking

As you are munching delightful dishes, you have nice wines for good company. From fruit wines to sparkling, red to white wines, this is one state where you will always have enough to drink with your friends. Beers and other drinks are also available throughout the state and there are nice bars and restaurants in Portland where you can enjoy all kinds of beverages –at affordable prices.

Sports

The popular basketball team, Blazers, is based in the state and apart from basketball; other sports include baseball, football and soccer.
