The Province
With a total area of more than a million square kilometers, it comes as a little surprise that Ontario is one of the largest provinces in Canada. When one views Ontario from various angles, one will be able to see its special features. Ontario is the richest province in the country and is home to Toronto, the most populous Canadian city. As if that is not enough, the capital of Canada itself, the beautiful city of Ottawa, is situated in Ontario. The province is also home to a mind-blowing number of freshwater lakes –over 250,000! Surely, Ontario has all it takes to be called a special province. The province is bounded by Manitoba in the west and Quebec on the east.
The famous Hudson Bay lies to the north while the American states of New York, Minnesota and Michigan form the southern border. It is also important to mention that Ontario is located near the Great Lakes region. The climate has been classified as being humid and continental in nature. The winters are cold while summers are warm.
The People
In the early part of the 19th century, the province was inhabited by Americans but with time, migrants flooded in from European nations and today, descendants of British settlers form the largest single ethnic group. In addition to the British, there are French, Germans, Italians, Dutch, Portuguese, Ukrainians, Russians, Spanish and Polish.
However, others are from Asian nations: China, the Philippines, Vietnam and Iran. There are aboriginal peoples but there are no indigenous Eskimos (Inuits) in Ontario. As for the religious distribution, the pattern is not too different from other parts of the country.
Almost 70% are Christians and the main denominations include the Roman Catholic Church, Protestant, Anglican Church of Canada and the United Church of Canada. Other religions practiced in Ontario are Islam, Hinduism, Judaism, Sikhism and Buddhism.
Places to Visit
As a province containing the capital of the country, Ontario plays host to millions of tourists from various parts of the globe and there are some places that you need to visit while touring the vast province. One place is the CN Tower in Toronto and is one of the tallest structures in the world. Other sites are the Parliament Hill, Niagara Falls and Sandbanks Provincial Park. Eating
Ontario is the melting pot of all cultures in Canada and you can be sure of enjoying various types of meals. You will be surprised and delighted with the sheer diversity of meals in Ontario. If you want a Chinese-inspired meal, I will recommend ginger beef, especially like the type made in Calgary. You will also find cheese curds and yellow pea soup irresistible.
