The Province
Located in the easternmost region of Canada, Nova Scotia is one of the country’s Maritime Provinces (with the other two being New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island). Although the province is the second smallest in the country, it is one of the most densely populated with almost a million residents. In the 17th century, Nova Scotia became the first permanent settlement in North America when the French colonists pitched their tents there. The climate of the province has been described as continental and because of its proximity to the Atlantic Ocean; the days are usually warm and moderate. Nova Scotia is mountainous in nature and is home to numerous lakes, and one of the most popular of these is the Bras d’Or on Cape Breton Island (also known as Ile Royale). Almost 80% of the province is forested and is rich in wildlife. The capital city is Halifax and it doubles as the largest. Fishing, agriculture, tourism, filmmaking and technology are very important activities in Nova Scotia.
The People
The indigenous peoples of the province are the Micmac Indians and today, they live on reservations. Around 10% of the Nova Scotians are descendants the French who settled in the province in the 17th century. They are known as the Acadians and apart from these, the Scottish form the largest proportion in the province as they make up almost a third of the population. Other ethnic groups are Irish, English, German, Dutch, Italian and Welsh. To summarize, people with European ancestry make up an overwhelming proportion of the population. Just as I observed in other provinces, a vast majority of the Nova Scotians are Christians and many follow three main churches: the Anglican Church of Canada, the Roman Catholic Church and the United Church of Canada.
Eating
Seafood is quite common in the provinces of Canada and Nova Scotia is no exception. In Halifax, I was able to devour some of the tastiest seafood in the world. From grilled scallops to fried salmon, Nova Scotia is the ultimate when it comes to seafood. You may decide to try out baked clams and fried fish. Being a province located in the maritime region, Nova Scotia offers you plentiful seafood at affordable rates. I will always cherish the memory of devouring grilled scallops in that Halifax restaurant. Another idea is also to sample pork on a waffle in a local eatery.
Drinking
Alcoholic beverages are sold but you can only get them from restaurants and bars that have been licensed by the Nova Scotia Liquor Corporation. Beers of all types and varying alcohol content are available and relatively cheap. Tourists also check out the numerous pubs in the province and you will find these pubs to be quite lively and vibrant. Fine wines made locally in the Annapolis Valley are also popular among the locals and tourists but the real deal is taking the rare malt whiskey. The legal drinking age in Nova Scotia is 19.
