The Country

Situated just to the north of the Equator, the Republic of Nicaragua is the largest country in Central America. Standing at the center of the isthmus that divides the Americas, Nicaragua shares borders with Costa Rica to the south and Honduras to the north. In addition, to the east of the country lies the beautiful Caribbean Sea while the Pacific Ocean bathes the country’s western coast.

Also, on the western flank of the country are two of the largest lakes in Central America and these include Lake Managua and Lake Nicaragua. By virtue of its location, Nicaragua is located in the tropics and that translates to plenty of sunshine.

Interestingly, the indigenous Indians like the Subtiavas make up a tiny percentage of the population.

In different parts of the country, Spanish is spoken widely and in some other regions, English is also used. Like many of the other countries in the region, Christianity is the major language in the country with the Roman Catholic Church being the largest denomination. Also, adherents of Judaism, Islam and other religions are in the minority. Export of seafood like shrimps is a major economic activity in Nicaragua.
