The Country

A tiny and landlocked nation located along the western slopes of the imposing Himalayas ranges, Nepal is a small country situated between two giants –China and India. The geography of the country is quite incredible as Nepal has some of the highest mountains in the world. As a matter of fact, the country has the highest mountain in the world, and that is none other than the Mount Everest itself standing at almost 8,900 meters above sea level. A land full of towering heights, Nepal has hundreds of mountains higher than 6,000 ft above sea level. For quite a long time, Nepal was a kingdom but became a republic in the year 2006 with the declaration of the nation has a secular state, effectively putting an end to the monarchy.

The People

Although small, Nepal has numerous ethnic groups and religious affiliations. The major ethnic groups are the Pahari, Tarai, Tharus and the Newar, Bhutia (Sherpa), Limbu, Tamang and Rai. The most widely spoken language in the country is Nepali (also known as Gorkhali) and is related to the ancient tongue of Sanskrit. Other languages spoken in the mountainous nation include Gurung, Magar, Sunwar, Newari and Sherpa. A larger proportion of Nepalese settle in the rural areas where farming and commercial activities are carried out.

When the matter shifts to foods, Nepal is one country that you will ignore at your own peril. The nation is blessed with some of the most tantalizing and tasty meals on the continent. For many of the citizens, the most popular food in the country is called dal bhat, and is a combination is specially-prepared rice and vegetables. Like in many other Asian nations, rice is a common feature in the Nepalese diet, and a good example is masu, which contains rice, spices and meat (not beef). This is because of the fact that a majority of the citizens are Hindus, and in Hinduism, cows are sacred and cannot be killed for heir beef. Snacks are readily available and a popular example is chura, which is made from rice that has been specially processed.

There are various drinks that you can take while on your stay and one popular example is the one called tongba and is made from cereals that have been fermented. Another example is called rakshi. It is alcoholic and is made from cereals that have been fermented and is also used in various occasions in the society in the country. The drink is made in the local bars and is considerably stronger than other drinks.
