The Country

The Republic of Nauru is an island nation located in the southwestern portion of the Pacific Ocean.

It is also worthy of note to state that Nauru is not too far from Australia and New Zealand, and it has strong diplomatic ties with these countries.

With a population that is less than 10,000, Nauru has the least population in the world –after the Vatican City. Also, when island nations are classified, Nauru is the smallest, with an area of just 21 sq km. The country was once a major producer of high-quality phosphate in the world although phosphate reserves have dried up and the nation is relying on other sources like tourism for revenue.

The People

Almost 60% of the people are ethnic Nauruans while the others are British, Chinese and those from the other neighboring islands in the region. Most of the British serve as expatriates or government employees while the Chinese are mainly into business.

English is also spoken, especially in the capital city of Yaren where most of the administrative offices are located. As far as religion is concerned, most Nauruans are adherents of Christianity, especially as Protestants. Others are Baha’is, Muslims and Buddhists.

Eating

Although Nauru is one of the smallest countries in the world, you will be taken aback with the number of delicious meals prepared on the islands. For me, the most tantalizing meals are those made from freshly-caught fish and seafood. Try a bowl of fried fish and you cannot but ask for more. When you want to spoil yourself a little, take the fresh fish with coconut meat and a jug of coconut milk.

Nauruans will also ensure that you taste their delightful fruits and vegetables. In addition to the local dishes, you can also take German, British and even Australian meals in many eateries and restaurants. Chinese foods and Vietnamese dishes are also quite popular in the country. As for, I could not stop taking specially-roasted chicken prepared by my hosts. I later learnt that fried chicken and a cup of iced cola is the most popular food on the island.

Perhaps, that explains the chubby cheeks of many of my Nauruan friends.

Drinking

When it comes to drinking in Nauru, soft drinks are very easy to get and in the rural areas, you can also try out the various local brews. While in Yaren, the capital city, you can enjoy imported gin, whisky and beers.

Sports in Nauru

If you say that Nauruans are living in a paradise, you will not be too far from the truth. Also, if you are the sports-loving type, you will impressed with the degree of sports development in the island nation. These include sports like tennis, basketball, rugby and soccer –I will always cherish my experience with the national football team.
