The Country

Monaco now is renowned as one of the richest states in the world and home to the stars was part of France until Italy invaded the island in 1943. Germany took over soon after, but even sooner after that the war ended and once again, Monaco was the property of France.

In 1956 the state came under the spotlight when the elegant and popular Hollywood star Grace Kelly married the Monaco prince Prince Rainier III. In 2005, twenty-five years after the death of Princess Grace, Rainier passed away, leaving the throne to his son Prince Albert II.

The People

Monaco is famous as a celebrity tax haven. Tennis stars such as Boris Becker and Marat Safin spend a lot of time here and Monaco’s love for motor sports has attracted residents from the world of Formula One.

In addition, rich businessmen flock from France, England and Germany and love to spend their euros and dollars at the casinos in Monte Carlo. There are so many so-called “foreigners” that Monaco must be one of the few places in the world where the natives are the minority.

Motor Racing

Monaco hosts two of the biggest motor races in the world- the Monaco Grand Prix and the Monte Carlo rally.

Beginning in 1929, the Monaco Grand Prix has become the most prestigious grand prix race in the formula season.

The car loving Prince Albert founded the Monte Carlo rally in 1911. He originally intended it for people to try out their new cars and claim great prestige for their product if they won the race. It has since evolved to become the opening race of the Inter Rally Challenge.

Soccer

For such a small island, Monaco has an incredibly successful soccer team. Perhaps because of their connections and money they can attract some of the best players.

French legends and world cup winners Thierry Henry and David Trezeguet both started the careers with the club and helped them to their 6thand 7th Ligue One titles – the top league in France.

Their most recent success was reaching the Champions League final in 2004, losing 3-0 to Porto.

Gambling

Gambling first became legal in Monaco in 1863 when Charles II decided to open the now legendary Monte Carlo Casino. From the beginning it was destined for success.

He signed a contract with the inventor of roulette and right until 1933 Monaco was the only casino where one could play the infamous game. Now Monaco has five major casinos. In 2004, they added the poker tournament Monaco Millions to their repertoire.

Unsurprisingly, the tournament has become one of the biggest poker tournaments in the world.
