The State

Located in the central part of the country, the state of Missouri is popular for having hundreds of counties and one independent city. The state is bounded in the north by Iowa, the south by Arkansas and to the west lies Kansas, Oklahoma and Nebraska.

To the east and across the mighty Mississippi River lies Tennessee, Illinois and Kentucky – that makes an impressive total of eight! It is important to point out that in the country, Tennessee has the same number of neighbors as the Show Me State.

Initially owned and controlled by France, it became an American possession with the Louisiana Purchase and was incorporated into the Union as the 24th state in 1821.

Like Illinois, the state of Missouri is a game changer when it comes to politics and has played a very significant role in influencing America’s political landscape.

The two largest cities in the state are St. Louis and Kansas City although the capital city is Jefferson City. Located close to Canada, the state’s climate (which has been classified as being humid continental) is moderated to a certain degree by that of the vast North American country.

The People

In the state, more than 80% of the people are Whites and many of them have roots in Europe especially in nations like the United Kingdom, Germany and France (you will meet Missouri Creole or the Missouri French).

Other Missourians are African Americans, Asians, Native Americans or Pacific Islanders.

The most widely spoken language in the state is English and in some other communities, Spanish, French and even indigenous languages are spoken. Interestingly but not surprisingly, over three-quarters of the Missourians are Christians with many being Protestants, Catholics or Anglicans.

If you want me to ‘show you’, I will: fried-brain sandwiches, pork steak, Gerber sandwiches, toasted ravioli and iced custard are some of the tasty meals you will come across while touring the state of Missouri.

In the rural areas, I helped myself to a serving of caramel nut tart and lemon-herb pot roast made from beef. To really conquer the cuisine of this fascinating state, try a bowl of venison soup.
