Situated in the southeastern part of the United States, Mississippi is one state that you will be fascinated with. As you might have guessed, the state is named after one of the longest rivers in North America –the Mississippi River.
The name of the river itself was derived from an Ojibwe word, which means the Great River. To the south of the state lies Louisiana and the Gulf of Mexico while to the east, we have the state of Alabama.
To the north, Mississippi is bounded by Tennessee and in the west lies Arkansas and Louisiana. Unlike the states in the Rocky Mountains, Mississippi is generally a low-lying state although there are some hills and forests scattered all over the state. I must also mention that the state is one of the largest producers of catfish in the country.
Today, the Whites are in the majority and what I find amazing about this is that an overwhelming number of them can trace their ancestry back to just one European country –the United Kingdom.
It is also interesting to state that there was a time when the Blacks (African Americans) dominated the population but that is no longer the case as Blacks are now just a little over a third of the state’s citizens.
Apart from the Whites and Blacks, other Mississippians are Asians, American Indians, Native Hawaiians and Pacific Islanders.
For a state that is known as one of the largest producers of catfish in the country, you do not have to be taken aback when you see fish with barbells in the soup served at a local bar.
Catfish is a local delicacy in the state and I made sure I ‘loaded’ myself with fried catfish while touring the state of the mighty river. It is also in Mississippi that you will enjoy the comeback sauce, which is made with cream and spices.
If you taste the sauce once, you will surely come back to the Hospitality State. Apart from these, I also learnt from my hospitable hosts that some meals are considered favorites in the state and these are crayfish and flounder, grits with cheese, fried oysters and chicken strips. I did not leave the state without sampling all these dishes!
Mississippi is home to a number of wineries and they produce nice wines, which are quite popular with the locals, especially the Carlos wines. In some other parts of the state, you can try out superb alcoholic drinks like spirits distilled in local copper pot stills.
Like many of the states in the country, sporting activities are quite popular in the state with many of the residents being religious followers of the events. Ice hockey, baseball, soccer and baseball are the leading sports in the state.
Catfish production is big business in the state.
