The State

Maryland is one of the original 13 states that established the foundation for the modern-state America. Named after Queen Henrietta, wife of King Charles I of England, Maryland is one of the oldest states in the country.

The state shares borders with the following states: Delaware to the east, Pennsylvania to the north, Virginia to the south while West Virginia and the District of Columbia lies to the west and the Atlantic Ocean is to the east.

Maryland is one of the best educational centers in the United States, playing host to prestigious educational institutions such as the Johns Hopkins University and the University of Maryland.

Baltimore is the largest city while the capital city is Annapolis and is one city with a history that is truly eventful and fascinating. For example, the city was the site of battle for control between the forces of the North and South during the American Civil War.

The legendary Mason and Dixon Line, which is traditionally seen as the boundary between the North and South forms the border between the state and Pennsylvania. Today, Maryland is the country’s hub for biotechnology.

The People

The original inhabitants of the area were the American Indian tribes such as the Potomac, Chesapeake, Patapsco and Wicomico but these tribes are virtually nonexistent in the 21st century.

Over two-thirds of the population are Whites while the others are African Americans (Blacks), Asians, American Indians and Hispanics.

Blacks can make up as much as a third of the population in Maryland and that is surely one of the highest in the country.

Almost 80% of the Marylanders are Christians while there is a tiny population of Muslims, Jews and Atheists. Among the Christians, the largest denominations are the Roman Catholics and Protestants (Baptists, Presbyterians, Methodists and Lutherans).

Eating

Staying in a state that is as lively as Maryland comes with its own advantages and one of the most obvious of these is the access to fantastic meals and lip-smacking dishes.

Of all the meals that I enjoyed in the lovely state of Maryland, crab cake and stuffed ham stand out as some of the finest although I changed my mind upon tasting blue crabs mixed with the legendary Old Bay (a spicy combination of pepper, ginger, cinnamon and bay leaf).

For me, this is the perfect treat for anyone. You can also try steamed mussels and fried oysters. Maryland may be the center of biotechnology but it is also the undisputed leader when it comes to superb seafood-inspired cuisine.

Drinking

For those interesting in cooling off after a hot day, there are various beers and liquors. Some of the most popular brands are Wild Goose and Blue Ridge. On the other hand, you can also buy soft drinks, malt drinks and fruit juices from almost any store around.

For the adventurous and fun-loving, the ultimate drinks are Maryland wines and the legendary rye whisky, which is but non-existent.

Sports

Marylanders are known to be lovers of sports and as a visitor, this fact is obvious everywhere you visit in the state. Hockey, basketball, basketball and horse racing are some of the most popular sports in the state.
