The Region
Like Hong Kong, Macau is also a Special Administrative Region (SAR) of the People’s Republic of China. It is situated on the western side of the delta of the Pearl River across from Hong Kong to the east. The Guangdong Province borders it to the north while it is flanked to the east and south by the South China Sea. As a territory, its economic activities are woven tightly around the industries of tourism and gambling. However, there is also some degree of manufacturing that also contributes to the economy. A bulk of the economy is in the hands of Cantonese people from the Guangdong area of China and Hong Kong. From the middle of the 16th century to the year 1999, Macau was administered by Portugal. In 1999, the sovereignty was given back to China. Today, Macau remains one of the richest places on earth with one of the biggest gambling industries.
The People
The demographics of Macau show that it is the most densely populated place on earth with an incredible 20,497 people living in one square kilometer as at 2013. An overwhelming 95% of the people are Chinese while another 2% are Portuguese or with an ancestry that is both Chinese and Portuguese. The latter category are humorously referred to as the Macanese. Almost half of the entire population were born in mainland China particularly Fujian and Guangdong. Others were born in Macau, Hong Kong, the Philippines and Portugal.
Eating
As you might have expected, eating in Macau is pure fun and a thoroughly delightful experience. There is an impressive array of Portuguese and Cantonese dishes. The most amazing part is that many of these meals have African, Indian, Asian, European and even Latin American flavors. From the spicy Galinha a Africana (African chicken) to the legendary Macanese chili shrimps, you will surely have your palate very active.
Drinking
Under the laws of Macau, alcoholic drinks are classified as ‘controlled products’. However, within the ambits of the laws, a tourist and other foreign visitors have an array of outlets where they can get all their desired drinks, from beers to wines to native juices. There is also an array of locally-made drinks and liquors that anyone will find really amazing and memorable.
Sports in Macau
By far, the most popular sporting activity in Macau is football (also known as soccer) and its national football team is widely admired. Rink hockey, which is a favorite of the Portuguese is also another huge favorite. As far as rink hockey is concerned, Macau is clearly the regional leader. It must also be mentioned that the Macau Grand Prix is the most prominent international event in Macau.
