The Country

Luxembourg is located at the crossroads of France, Germany, and Belgium. In addition, it is the only remaining Grand Duchy in the world.  Also, the history of Luxembourg has been colored by its loss of independence to other countries in close proximity.

The latest annexation happened in 1942 to Nazi’s Germany.  Luxembourg was liberated in September 1944 and became a founding member of the United Nations in 1946 and of NATO in 1949.

The myriad of new modern office complexes being built on the plâteau Kirchberg testify to Luxembourg’s reputation as a major international financial centre.

The People

Although Luxembourg is a small country, people living there have a large world mentality influenced by being at the “heart of Europe”.

At the same time, family values and traditions are very strong and often take on the first priority in people’s lives.

Parents are intimately involved in both education and career choices for their children and family is often seen as the basis of social structure.

Activities:

Drinking

Luxembourg is the heaviest drinking country in the world according to Forbes magazine.

Residents pound down 15.5 liters of alcohol in a year.  It is a fun place to drink and mingle, especially in the fall and spring when crowds gather in outdoor pubs and put away this amazing amount of liquor and make fast friends with those who can keep up.

1000 Years In 100 minutes

Wenzel Cultural Walk is an outstanding cultural circular itinerary.  It is the route named after Wenceslas 11, the Duke of Luxembourg who fortified the city.

The walk starts at the Bock promontory and takes in the Chemin de la Corniche, old gates, the Wenzel ring wall, medieval bridges, the Alzette Valley and French military architecture.

Art

Art lovers will find numerous galleries in the capital as well as some excellent museums.  MUDAM is museum of modern art and has some of the most progressive modern art in its 6000 sq feet of space.

Luxembourg City History Museum has an extensive exhibit displaying detailed account of city’s colorful history.   For me, however, no museum came close to browsing a flea market at the Place d’Armes.

It is a tree-lined square where every second Saturday one can hunt for bargain prints or paintings or just watch the world go by while having a coffee or a beer.
