The State

Located in the southern part of the United States, the state of Louisiana was admitted as the 18th state of the Union in 1812.

The state of Louisiana is bounded in the north by Arkansas, Mississippi to the east and has Texas to its west and in its southern part; there is the Gulf of Mexico. Therefore, climate of the state is subtropical and that manifests as wet summers and mild winters.

The relief of the state can be classified into three for better understanding and these include the terraces, lowlands and the elevated regions. Hence, the soils of the state are quite fertile and have supported large-scale cultivation of food and cash crops. The capital city is Baton Rouge. However, the largest city in Louisiana is New Orleans.

The People

Without any doubt, the state of Louisiana is a diverse one and the multicultural nature of the society is manifested everywhere I visited.

Today, the descendants of the French are found mainly in the southern part of the state where they are known as the Cajuns and Creoles. In fact, you will find their cultures to be very fascinating.

Apart from those with European roots, other Louisianans are Blacks (African Americans), Asians, Native Hawaiians (or other Pacific Islanders) and American Indians.

As for the religious affiliations, about 90% of the residents are Christians. However, there is a handful of Muslims, Jews and Buddhists.

Eating

To eat in Louisiana is to engage in a most pleasurable activity. You will notice and appreciate the diversity of the state’s cultures in their meals. The following are some of the dishes you will come across if you happen to visit the Child of the Mississippi: steamed crabs, smoked meat, red beans and rice (simply outstanding), seafood boil, Bourbon chicken and bread pudding.

These are just some of the dishes I conquered in the state and there is nothing stopping you from breaking the culinary record!

Drinking

Just as the meals vary in taste and flavor, you will also find the drinks to be diverse in nature. For example, some of the most popular of these are the ones called Hurricane and the hand grenade. Therefore, if you are sure of yourself, you have to throw a hand grenade to your throat!

Nothing can be more interesting! I also noticed that getting French wines posed no problem at all. Perhaps, that is because of the large population of French immigrants in the state, especially in the southern parts. In addition, beers, lagers and ales of various brands are also available.

Sports

Louisiana is one of the most interesting places in the country as far as sport is concerned. Popular games in the state include hockey, basketball, baseball and football. However, there are other sports, these are not the only ones.

Therefore, if you are someone who is passionate about sports, your stay here will be memorable.

Interesting Facts

There are no counties in Louisiana, only parishes. Hence, that makes it unique in a way.
French is also spoken as an official language in the state. Therefore, do not be surprised to see French speakers.
The state is home to the legendary New Orleans Jazz. Therefore, have a lot of musical fun!
National Historical Park. The honey bee has been adopted as the state’s official insect.

Louisiana souvenirs

Moreover, Louisiana, with its several iconic symbols and landmarks, has always been and remains one of the most popular places to purchase souvenirs. However, among the many options of Louisiana-themed souvenirs, shot glasses are considered particularly and intriguing items for collecting or gifting.
