The Country

Liberia is a republic on the coast of West Africa. The neighboring nations are Sierra Leone to the northwest, Ivory Coast to the east, Guinea to the north while the Atlantic Ocean is to the south and west of the country. On the continent, Liberia occupies a unique position.

For example, it is the only country on the continent that was never colonized by any foreign power. This is in addition to the fact that it is the oldest republic in Africa. The capital city is Monrovia and it was named in honor of a former President of the United States, James Monroe.

The People

Before taking about the people of Liberia, it is important to state some few historical facts. The country was formed as a settlement for freed slaves from the United States. This legacy is quite visible until this day. There are about 16 different ethnic groups (original settlers) in the country and the make up a chunk of the population.

The Kpelle ethnic group is the largest in the country and members of this group are classified under the Mande language group. Other ethnic groups are the Loma, Malinke and Mende. More than 80% of the citizenry follow the Christian faith while the others are either Muslims or animists.

Liberia is the home of George Opong Weah, former World Footballer of the Year and former presidential aspirant. The country is ruled by President (Mrs.) Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf, the first woman to be democratically elected president in any African nation.

What to Eat and Drink

Being a country with an American heritage, it is quite easy to find restaurants and hotels serving American dishes, and I observed this in many of the hotels and eateries in the capital city of Monrovia. Apart from this, there are various meals from all parts of the globe –France, Lebanon, China and other African nations. The national delicacy is a stew made from goat meat and I thoroughly enjoyed sampling it. There is also a snack made from rice and bananas. There are various beers and wines in many of the cities and towns all over Liberia.

Places to Visit

For starters, the fantastic beaches on the Atlantic Coast. From there, you can visit the mangrove forests and see all kinds of rare plants and animals. I also visited the Sapo National Park and saw wild animals like pygmy hippos, antelopes and elephants. The town of Buchanan was also on my itinerary but was unable to reach it.

Liberia souvenirs

Moreover, Liberia, with its several iconic symbols and landmarks, has always been and remains one of the most popular places to purchase souvenirs. However, among the many options of Liberia-themed souvenirs, shot glasses are considered particularly and intriguing items for collecting or gifting.
