The Country
The Republic of Lebanon is situated on the eastern coast of the Mediterranean Sea. Lebanon shares borders with Syria and Israel, and it has a very rich historical background. The ancient Phoenicians were said to have settled in Lebanon and were known as some of the best seafarers and they made their imprints on history.
Lebanon is a very beautiful country and it attracts millions of tourists in the region. The capital city is Beirut and although Lebanon is an Arab nation, it is somewhat different from the other typical Arab countries in the Persian Gulf.
The People
In addition, Lebanon is a heterogeneous nation and in terms of ethnic and linguistic affiliations, there are Greek, Phoenician, Arab and Armenian groups. The official language is Arabic and is also the most widely used language in the country. Other languages in use are French, English and Syriac.
Also, unlike what obtains in many other countries in the region, Lebanon has a large Christian population although Muslims are in the majority. Religious tolerance and harmony are pleasant traits of the Lebanese nation. The Maronite Christians form the largest sect of Christianity. Lebanon has a typical Mediterranean climate, and that means there are dry summers and the winters are mild.

Eating
If there is anything that will make you fall in love with Lebanon apart from the warm nature of its people, it is the cuisine. Lebanese foods are some of the most delicious I have ever tasted. For anyone that doubts this, all you need to do is to eat the mulukiyah, a kind of soup made from mallow leaves, beef and chicken. The meal is not complete without onions and vinegar served over rice.
Drinking
There is an alcoholic drink called araq in Lebanon. It is clear and colorless, and made from the aniseed plant. It is the most popular drink in the country and is even considered the national drink. Coffee is also widely consumed.
Sports
The country is quite vibrant when it comes to sports and is known to be a center for swimming, skiing and hiking. Also, other sports in the country include basketball and football.
