The Country

The Republic of Kenya is one of the most popular countries in Africa and all over the globe, the nation is known for its spectacular wildlife and game reserves. Kenya was colonized by the United Kingdom and became independent in 1963. One of the largest coffee and tea producers in the world, Kenya lies on the Equator and that brings about a hot, tropical climate. However, its proximity to the Indian Ocean helps in moderating the climate. Kenya is a regional power and its capital city of Nairobi is a commercial centre for the entire East African subregion.

The People

Although Kenya is an ethnically diverse nation, the people are known for their warmth and hospitality. I will always cherish the reception I received upon arriving at the port city of Mombasa. A vast majority of the Kenyans speak Swahili (or Kiswahili) but they come from different tribes and ethnic groups. The most predominant groups are the Kikuyu, Kalenjin, Luhya, Luo, Kamba and the Meru. There is also a significant population of Europeans and Asians (especially Chinese and Indians). Kenya is the home of some of the most talented athletes in the world (like David Rudisha and Paul Tergat).

Eating

As a visitor, one of the most rewarding and exciting experiences I had in the East African country was eating out. The nation is one vast place and from region to region, you can taste some of the finest foods on the continent. One meal that I will never forget is the akoho amin boanio. This meal is common in many Kenyan villages and is made with chicken and coconut milk. I took it with a bowl of steaming rice and to be sincere, nothing tasted better. There is also the samusa, a shapely snack filled with spiced beef or vegetables. All over Kenya, eating is always a tantalizing experience.

Drinking

By far, the most popular drink in Kenya is the Tusker Lager and I noticed that there was virtually no restaurant or eatery we visited that did not have this beer. For many Kenyans, this is the authentic national drink. In the hinterland, the muratina is also popular, especially among the Kikuyus and is prepared from fruit juice and sugar cane.

Places To Visit

Without any iota of doubt, I can confidently state that Kenya is one of the most beautiful countries in the world. I took time to visit some of the most spectacular places in the country: the Nairobi National Park, the Great Rift Valley, Mount Kenya (the highest point in the nation at almost 5,200 meters) and the Tsavo National Park where I met other tourists from other parts of the globe.
