The State
The state of Kansas is one state that will dazzle you with its diversity. Although it is located in the central part of the country, Kansas has features of a typical state in the Midwest.
Named after the Kansa Indians, the state is bounded by Missouri to the east, Colorado to the west, Oklahoma to the south and its northern boundary is shared with Nebraska. The climate of the state is continental temperate and that implies extreme swings in the temperature.
Also known as the Wheat State, Kansas produces more wheat than any other state and that brings to mind the fact that the state was once the nation’s agricultural powerhouse. Today, agriculture is still an important part of the state’s economy but industrial activities now generate more revenue for the state.
The capital city is Topeka but the largest city is Wichita, which is a fascinating place to be. Often referred to as the Air Capital of the World, Wichita produces more aircraft than any other city in the world. The city is also a major center for manufacturing and chemical production.
The People
Originally populated by various Native American tribes, Kansas is now a state of breath-taking diversity. Today, there are Whites (who form the clear majority), Hispanics (Latinos), Alaskan Natives and of course, American Indians.
It is important to note that the Whites have varying backgrounds, as they are mainly descendants of immigrants from England, Ireland, France, Netherlands, Italy, Sweden, Germany, Poland and other nations in Europe.
Interestingly, you will find these residents in their own communities.
For example, those with German ancestors tend to settle in the northwest cities like Russell and Hays. An overwhelming number of Kansans are Christians (almost 90%) and the main denominations are the United Methodist Church, Baptist Church, Anglican Church and the United Church of Christ.
Eating
Staying in Kansas simply means having access to some of the finest foods in North America. There are many inns, eateries and restaurants where you can have a bite of the delightfully spiced burgers.
Apart from these, there are some other dishes in the state that you have to try out. These include horseradish pickles, jalapeno mustard and in one of the bakeries, I had the opportunity of enjoying a special cake called the povitica.
Roasted turkey, smoked ham and cheese are some of the other delicacies that are worth trying out. For those who cannot do without fruits, Kansas is home with its treasure trove of strawberries, peaches, apples, grapes, raspberries and gooseberries.
If there is any state that should be described as being delicious, it has to be Kansas!
Drinking
There are numerous brands of fruit wines that you must try out while in this rectangle-shaped state. Also, the state has many wineries that churn out world-class vintage wines on a daily basis. Interestingly, tea, coffee and fruit juices are also common.
Sports
Soccer, ice hockey, basketball and baseball are the most prominent sports in the state. Wichita Thunder is one of the most astounding ice hockey teams in the region.
