The State

With a name meaning the ‘Land of the Indians’, Indiana is one of the most interesting states in the United States. Its admission into the Union was finalized in 1816 and is one of the smallest states in the country.

Also known as the Hoosier State, the state is known for being a hub of agriculture and manufacturing. Services and retail trading are also of prime importance in the state. The state shares borders with the following states: Ohio to the east, Illinois to the west, Kentucky to the south and Michigan to the north.

By virtue of its location and geography, Indiana is one of the typical Midwest states and one of the states making up the Great Lakes region. The most prominent natural features in the state are the Appalachian Mountains, the Wabash, Ohio and White Fork Rivers.

I must also say that I was thrilled with the state’s variable seasons –four in number. For me, the best part of the year to tour Indiana is during the fall. The capital city is Indianapolis and I think that is very appropriate.

The People

Although Indiana is often seen as a multicultural, one cannot fail to notice the fact that Whites are in a clear majority making up over 80% of the population.

Apart from the white-skinned, other Hoosiers (as the state residents are called) are the Blacks (African Americans), Asians, Hispanics (Latinos) and the Native Americans.

I also noticed that of the many Whites in the state, many have European roots –not surprising anyway. Whites in Indiana are mainly descendants of immigrants who came from Germany, England, Ireland, and Poland.

As I had envisaged, the predominant religion in the state is Christianity (although some tourists would expect the ancient Native Indian religions because of the state’s name). The largest denominations in the state are the Roman Catholic Church and the United Methodist Church.

Eating

The most popular food crop in the state is corn and you will surely find the various corn-based dishes amazing and delicious. For example, the popcorn is superb and you can try it with strawberry-flavored ice cream.

In some other parts of the state, I was offered breaded pork tenderloins and biscuits complete with apple butter. Up until this moment, I do not think I have tasted something better.

Fresh fruits (especially apples, blackberries and peaches) and vegetables are also available all over the state and if you are a lover of apples, this state will pamper you with its fifty varieties of apples!

Oh, I almost forgot, there are lovely steakhouses in Indiana and I tried out the traditional steak at an eatery in Gary –delicious and well-made.

Drinking

This state is known for its vintage wines and as a tourist, you can always try out hundreds of award-winning wines –especially when the wineries have one of their numerous ceremonies. When it comes to what to drink, the wineries of Indiana are very good –they will remind you of Missouri!

Sports

There is no way you will talk about sports in Indiana without mentioning auto racing. Indianapolis is world-famous for its annual Indy 500 Series at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Apart from racing, another hugely popular sport in the state is basketball. Other sports include ice hockey, soccer, baseball and golf.
