The Country

One of the most developed places on earth, Hong Kong is one of the two Special Administrative Regions of the People’s Republic of China. Located on the south coast of China, it is surrounded by the South China Sea and Pearl River Delta. Hong Kong is famous for many things and some of these include its iconic skyline and an impressive deep natural harbor.

For a population of over seven million people crammed in just over a thousand kilometers square, Hong Kong is one of the densest places in the world. Hong Kong also has one of the most important business centers in the world. A place with an enchanting history, Hong Kong was colonized by Britain after First Opium War. At first, it was ceded to the UK for all time, then Kowloon Peninsula. During the Pacific War, it was occupied by Japan and after that, the British resumed control until 1997.

The People

A vast proportion of Hong Kongers are ethnic Chinese making up almost 95% of the population. Of these Chinese, most of them have their roots in the Guangdong area of China. However, it is also noteworthy to point out that many of those in Hong Kong today are offspring of the immigrants from mainland China, with some having migrated from other parts of the globe. There are minority ethnic groups from Indonesia and the Philippines and they work mainly as foreign domestic helpers. Almost 280,000 domestic foreign workers are present in Hong Kong, making up about 4% of the overall population.
