The Dependency

Like its neighbor Jersey, the Nazis occupied Guernsey during World War Two. Worse for them, the Nazis even built a concentration camp in Alderney. They didn’t exactly use the islanders as slaves, but they did force them to work there.

In addition, they imprisoned 2,000 islanders in Germany. For a country at that had a population of 2,000 at that time, it was about 5% of the population. Britain liberated them from Nazis in 1945 and they became a dependent of the British crown.

The People

If this small Guernsey Island doesn’t produce another person of note they can always be proud that Victor Hugo lived and writer there. Considering his influence on popular culture- he wrote Hunchback of Notre Dame- it is quite a claim.

For those not so interested in literature, the Southampton and England footballers Matt le Tissier and Graeme le Saux were both brought up here. Matt le Tissier was such a good player during the 90s, some would say one of the talented players England ever produced, that the fans nicknamed him God.

Sark

Sark is a tiny island within Guernsey’s jurisdiction that has had a quite influence on literature.

The famous British writer Mervyn Peake had a home here and his novel Mr. Pye is set on the island, though he uses a different name. It is not its only tourist attraction. It is a beautiful place with a variety of marine life and wild life.

Guernsey Festival of Comedy

Most people associate Guernsey with water sports. While that is one of the island’s biggest attractions for ten days in June, everyone lets their hair down for the comedy festival. It doesn’t attract the most famous of names, but if you are into comedy it is a cheaper alternative to the Edinburgh festival, and you are just as likely to find the next big name.

Flower Shows

Guernsey has several public gardens including Victor Hugo’s gardens and proudly shows off their heritage with a range of flower shows throughout the summer. Most famous is the season’s traditional curtain closer at the end of August, the Battle of the Flowers. In this event locals build floral floats in the hope to win the prestigious Prix de Honneur.
