The Country

Guam is a lively, tropical island with gorgeous, sandy beaches and cultural activities galore. It is also a shopping mecca, which many tourists are surprised to find out when they arrive. The entire island of Guam is duty free, so travelers to the island can purchase luxury items and souvenirs cheaper than just about anywhere in the world. Another fun and surprising fact about Guam is it is home to the largest K-mart in the entire world. So, if your ideal vacation is sipping a mai tai on a pristine sandy beach after you’ve shopped all day and found the most amazing bargains, Guam is the tourist destination for you.

The People

The Chamorro people are indigenous to Guam. Their culture is actually a mix of Micronesian, Spanish, and American cultures, and they value respect above all else, especially respect shown to elders of the group. When traveling to the island you will find the people are gregarious and welcoming to visitors, and take great pride and joy in their native dance, song, and cuisine.

Eating

For such a small island, Guam has quite an emerging night life and restaurant scene. One can expect to find a smorgasbord of ethnic food, from American, Chinese, European, Filipino, Indonesian, Japanese, Korean and Mexican. Guamanian food itself is similar to Spanish food and includes such regional favorites as Kelaguen, which is a dish made of chopped chicken, lemon juice, grated coconut and hot peppers. Another favorite regional dish is Apigigi. This is a decadent dessert made from coconut milk and tapioca which is then wrapped and grilled in a banana leaf. Can you say to die?

Drinking

If you’ve never been there, you may not suspect that Guam has such a happening night scene. Many clubs and discos offer tourists a place to go for dancing and entertainment, and at these clubs a visitor can find any cocktail or libation their heart desires. The locals, however, pretty much are beer drinkers, and Guam has its very own brewery on the island which puts out a fine selection of microbrewed ales and lagers.

Celebrations & Holidays

Every year on July 21st, Guam celebrates Liberation Day, commemorating the day American forces liberated the island from the Japanese. On this day the whole island celebrates with fireworks, festivities, a parade, and the Liberation Carnival at Paseo Park, providing islanders with rides, foods and games. If you’re lucky enough to be in Guam at this time, check out the festivities and have a great time with the locals. With all that has been stated, you will agree that Guam is one place for one to enjoy and have a nice time with your loved ones. Guam remains one of the best hidden tourism secrets in the world and you will do yourself a lot of good by paying a visit, at least once.
