The Country

Situated in the West Indies, Grenada is in the southern extremity of the Lesser Antilles. Shaped like an ellipse, the island nation is located to the north of the petroleum-rich Latin America nation of Venezuela. Also, apart from the big island of Grenada, there are some other smaller islands and these are located to the south of the Grenadines.

The island nation itself is located to the southwest of the Saint Vincent and the Grenadines and northwest of Trinidad and Tobago. St. George’s is the capital city and is also known for being the principal port for the country. Once thing that you will not fail to notice in the capital city are the brightly-painted buildings. In the region, the capital city is also a center for lovers of yachting.

The People

I found the population distribution of Grenada to be a pleasant surprise. An overwhelming proportion of the citizens are Blacks and are the descendants of the slaves shipped from West African nations during the notorious Transatlantic Slave Trade.

The predominant language in the country is English and as far as religious affiliation is concerned, Grenada can be said to be a Christian nation. The largest denominations include those of the Roman Catholic Church, Seventh-day Adventists, Anglicans and Methodists.

There is a handful of the adherents of other faiths on the island nation too. Like many of the other nations in the Caribbean, tourism, agriculture and fishing are the most important economic activities in the country.

Eating and Drinking

For the ‘Isle of Spice’, you should not be surprised to have a meal that contains all the spices –ginger, cinnamon, chili, bay leaf, nutmeg and all! Roasted chicken is popular in Grenada and you will also be thrilled with the salted cod. Also, fruit juices are widely consumed.

During the latter part of the summer, the whole capital becomes aglow with the excitement of various festivities such as the annual Carnival, e very colorful and enchanting event which attracts tourists from far and near.

Grenada is also called the Isle of Spice or the Spice Island of the Caribbean and this can be attributed to the fact that the island is a thriving center for the cultivation of spices such as cloves, cinnamon, mace and nutmeg.

Apart from spices, other food crops such as yams, cassava and potatoes are also cultivated and exported from Grenada. This fact is also depicted on the national flag of the country and it is very easy to spot.
Grenada is a member of the Commonwealth.
Also, in terms of area, Grenada is actually one of the smallest countries on earth.

The Grenada Dove is the country’s national bird. This bird actually has the status of an endangered specie.
Over time, the island was colonized by France and the United Kingdom.
Grenada became an independent state in 1974. It was led to independence by Eric Gairy, the same person who later became its first Prime Minister.
The island nation was once invaded by the United States.
One of the smaller islands is called the Saline Island.
