The Country

Berlin is the capital city of Germany.  From the world wars, being divided and Berlin wall, it has seen more than its share of turmoil since being founded in the 12th century.   Berlin emerged as a unified city in the 1990.  Today, it is Germany’s largest city with a population of 3.4 million people.  It is a vibrant city home to numerous events, festivals and universities and attracts young artists, researchers and film producers
The People
According to a local German poll, the three “best” Germans are Konrad Adenauer, Martin Luther and Karl Marx.  The 3.3 million votes showed that division of Germany still has a prime spot in people’s minds.  Adenauer led West Germany as a chancellor during post war re-building.  Martin Luther was a German priest who initiated the Protestant Reformation.   Karl Marx is probably the most surprising of the three and was a famous German philosopher who developed social-political theory of Marxism.

Eating in Germany

Breakfast is my favorite meal time in Berlin.  The only problem is deciding what to eat especially in a breakfast buffet that most of the time includes salmon and horseradish as well as a wonderful selection of cheeses and cold cuts.  There are over 12,000 restaurants in Berlin offering a great variety of dishes and excellent ambience.  Traditional dishes can be a little heavy and are much better enjoyed with large quantities of beer; however, deserts are varied and scrumptious.  Mozartkugeln or Mozart balls are known all over the world as Krapfen or Berliner.  Gummibären or Gummi Bear was invented in 1922 in the Kessenic area of Bonn, in the kitchen of confectioner Hans Riegel, owner of the company Haribo and are now a favorite among kids and adults alike.

Drinking

Not surprisingly the most popular drink in Berlin is beer. It usually takes a while to be served both because you might not speak German but mostly because to be poured properly it takes full 7 minutes.  The two important breweries are Schultheiss and Kindl.  Berlin breweries brew over 3 million hectoliters of beer per year.  For wine lovers, Rhine region produces 1.2 billion bottles of wine annually with white wine accounting for two thirds of the total.

Soccer

Germany is one of the three most successful national teams at international competitions, having won a total of three World Cups and three European Championships. They have also been runners-up three times in the European Championships, four times in the World Cup, and further won four 3rd places. Germany is the only nation to have won both the men’s and women’s World Cups.  German fans are notoriously dedicated and are willing to travel many kilometers to support their national team.

Germany souvenirs

Moreover, Germany, with its several iconic symbols and landmarks, has always been and remains one of the most popular places to purchase souvenirs. However, among the many options of Germany-themed souvenirs, shot glasses are considered particularly and intriguing items for collecting or gifting.
