The State

Connecticut is one of the six northeastern states of the United States known as the New England states. Other states in the region include New Hampshire, Vermont, Rhode Island, Massachusetts and Maine.

It is also interesting to know that Connecticut is one of the original 13 states. In terms of the area, Connecticut is one of the least populated in the country and that explains its relatively high population density.

The capital city is Hartford although the largest city in the state is Bridgeport. The capital city is home to the Hartford Courant, which is the oldest surviving newspaper in the United States and the legendary writer, Mark Twain.

Connecticut is a state of fascinating geographical features and these include the following: the Appalachian Mountains, Connecticut River and Mount Frissell. The weather in the state is known to be notoriously unsteady.

A sunny day could suddenly give way to a thunderstorm. Information available show that the name of the state was derived from the Native Indian word Quinnehtukqut, which can be translated to mean “close to the long tidal river.”

The Photos

Records show that the first people to settle in the area that is now Connecticut were the Native Indians (who spoke Algonquian). With time, immigrants came from England, Ireland and other parts of Europe (especially France, Poland, Italy, Austria and Russia).

Today, more than four-fifths of the people in the state have Europeans as their ancestors and other people include the following: African Americans, Hispanics (especially from Mexico, Puerto Rico and other parts of Latin America).

There are also Asians and Pacific Islands. The predominant religion in Connecticut is Christianity and the major denominations are the Roman Catholic Church and the Protestant movement.

Eating

Since Connecticut is one of the New England states, I was not too surprised that meals in the region were similar. In this area, you will be served meals like grinders and a number of Italian-styled dishes.

One very popular meal in the state is apizza and you will do well to have a bite. Seafood features prominently in the cuisine and you can always enjoy baked haddock, fried salmon and broiled cod; it all depends on your preference. Connecticuters also seem to have a particular liking for the Hasty Pudding.

Drinking

When it comes to drinking in the state, there is absolutely no problem as there are various alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages in many stores and restaurant. There are many local beers and you can always grab a mug of ale in any of the numerous pubs.

However, one thing that struck me about the state is the relative popularity of maple syrup and that is quite unusual as this is the national drink of Canada. Although the state can be a small one, you should never underestimate what the Nutmeggers will fill your belly with!

Sports

Sports in Connecticut is big business and many of the residents are keen fans and followers of the various sporting events in the states. Baseball, ice hockey, rugby, basketball and football rank as the most followed sports in the state.

Interesting Facts

Connecticut is one of the smallest states in the country.
The state has one of the highest standards of living in the United States.
The prestigious Yale University is in the state.
Connecticut is the birthplace of former United States President, George W. Bush.
