The State
Colorado is located in the western region of the country and is one of the ‘Mountain States’. This appellation originates from the fact that around 50% of the state is covered by the Rocky Mountains (or the Rockies) which is one of the most important mountain ranges in North America.
Colorado is neatly shaped as it is a clearly-cut rectangle and it shares borders with the following states: Nebraska and Wyoming to the north, Utah to the west, Kansas and Nebraska to the east and New Mexico and Oklahoma to the south.
The name of the state was given to it by early Spanish settlers and it means ‘the red-colored’ to describe the Colorado River, which is a major hydrographic feature in the state.
