The State

The state of California is one of the largest in the country and it is so vast in area that only the states of Alaska and Texas are larger. The capital city of the ‘Golden State’ is Sacramento.

California shares border with Arizona and Nevada to the east, Oregon to the north, Pacific Ocean to the east while a Mexican state (Baja) lies to the south.

California is a place of impressive physical beauty and visitors and residents alike are always fascinated with the diverse geography and relief of the area. There are towering mountains (especially the range called Sierra Nevada) and deserts.

One of the most enduring symbols of the city is the angelic city of Los Angeles, one of the largest and arguably the most vibrant in the country. Like millions of the other tourists, I find the beaches very enchanting. Try the beaches and enjoy the fresh air of the Pacific.

The People

Almost 60% of Californians are Whites while just a little over a third of the population are Hispanics (especially from Mexico and other nations in Latin America).

Other residents in the state are Asians, Native Hawaiians, Native Indians and Pacific Islanders. Many of the Asians in California are Chinese or Japanese. I observed that religion is a tantalizing issue in California.

About a third of the people claim Christianity but you will be amazed with the number of exotic faiths and cults that exist in the state. There are numerous faith healers and many tourists cannot resist the urge to visit the Church of Scientology and the various ‘temples’ of worship in the state.

Eating

You can imagine what it is to dine in America’s largest state: exciting and fabulous! The meal actually depends on the area of the state you have chosen to dine.

As a result of the Spanish heritage and the influence of Mexican culture in the state, it is quite common for you to come across ‘Latino’ foods. These include carne asada fries, tortas, tacos and burritos.

Also, the state’s close location to the Pacific Ocean means a constant supply of fresh seafood. I took advantage of this and devoured grilled salmon and spicy Dungeness crabs. For those with the Oriental tongue, California has many typical Asian dishes like the Japanese sushi and Chinese noodles.

Drinking

If you ever find yourself in California, one thing that you never have to worry about is what to drink. The state is home to some of the best wineries in the world and you can always get your favorite wines.

Many tourists will agree that Californian wines are some of the finest they have ever tasted. Beers and other alcoholic drinks are available in bars, hotels and restaurants.

On the other hand, soft drinks and fruit juices are also sold at many stores and you will not have any trouble getting your favorite flavor.

Sports

If you are a lover of sports, you will find it quite difficult to leave California.

For a state that has hosted the Olympic Games twice, and still one of the most important sporting centers of the country, anyone will be thrilled at the immensity of sporting events in the Golden State.

The state is home to excellent teams such as the San Francisco 49ers, Los Angeles Kings and the San Francisco Giants. The most popular sports include American football, baseball, basketball, ice hockey and soccer.
