The Country

Perched on the southern end of the Malay Peninsula, Singapore is one of the most developed nations not only in Asia but also in the world. The country is an archipelago of over 60 islands with rhombus-shaped Singapore Island being the largest. Not too far from Malaysia with which it once formed a federation before splitting in 1965 to become an independent state, Singapore is also close to the island nation of Indonesia.

Over time, the country has been ruled by the British and Japanese, and the legacies of these superpowers can still be seen until today. Globally renowned as a financial hub, the economy of the country is one of the fastest growing in the world, making the country one of the Asian Tigers. The name of the country means ‘Lion City’ from the ancient language of Sanskrit.

The People

Although the country is diverse, the Chinese are in the majority as they form around 75% of the population. The Malays form the second largest ethnic group while the Indians and Tamils are the other important groups in the country. The predominant religion in the country is Buddhism followed by a third of the citizens. Other religions are Taoism, Islam, Hinduism and Christianity. The constitution recognizes four principal languages, and these are English, Chinese, Malay and Tamil. Most Singaporeans can speak and understand English. Singaporeans are very good hosts and know how to treat tourists and visitors with a great sense of hospitality.

Places to Visit

Singapore is a beautiful country and as a tourist, there are more than enough places to visit. One place that you must visit is the Port of Singapore, one of the busiest in the world. Other places include the Esplanade, Boat Quay, National Stadium of Singapore, Singapore Flyer, Parliament House and even the Singapore River.

Eating

One feature that you will find very tempting in the country is the cuisine. There is a diversity of rich dishes that you can choose from. To top it all, the foods are quite cheap. One meal that I still miss very much is nasi goreng, which is made from rice, seafood (especially shrimp), spices, eggs and chicken.

Nasi goreng is simply delicious and you need to taste it to really appreciate it. In some other bars, you can enjoy a special meal of noodles called char kway teow, and is made with eggs, vegetables and spices. As if that is not enough, your heart will melt with a dish of Chinese chicken rice, which is made with spices and steamed chicken.

Drinking

The most popular drink in the country is a cocktail called Singapore Sling and it has been taken since the period of the colonial masters. Slightly reddish in color, the cocktail is a blend of fresh fruit juices and some other alcoholic drinks. You can also enjoy the various beers and wines while many tourists never forget the taste of Tiger, the locally made drink.

Sports

Not surprisingly, water-based sports like swimming, kayaking, scuba diving and surfing are very popular in the country. Other sports include basketball, football and racing.
