The Country

Located in the heart of mainland Southeast Asia, Thailand is an enchanting nation. The country is a monarchy and is home to some of the oldest civilizations in the world. The country shares borders with other nations in the Southeast region: Laos, Burma, Cambodia and Malaysia. The country was formerly called Siam and is a nation of great physical beauty. There are majestic mountains, celestial beaches and very fertile floodplains. There is a King for the country and he doubles as the Head of State. The current monarch is King Bumble Adulyadej of the Royal House of Chakri and is the longest reigning royal in the world having been made the king in 1946. The capital city is Bangkok and is also the country’s center of commerce and culture.

The People

Like in the other nations of Southeast Asia, Thailand is a multiethnic and multicultural society. Of all the ethnic groups, the Thai form the largest fraction of the country’s population as they make up more than half of the citizenry. Other ethnic groups in country are the Mon, Khmer, Malay, Wa (Lawa), Semang and the Chinese. The official language in the country is Thai while others are Chinese, Yawi (Malay), Orang-Asli, Cham, Karen, Hmong and many others. More than 95% of the Thais are followers of Theravada Buddhism while Muslims, Hindus, Jews, Christians and Sikhs form a minority.

Eating

One aspect of Thai culture that tourists are always in love with is the cuisine. Thai foods are regularly ranked as some of the most delicious in the world, and this is not an exaggeration. One feature of Thai cuisine is the heavy use of spices and flavorings, and that gives the food a distinct Oriental taste. One meal that you will never forget is the tasty tom yam kung nam khon which is made from seafood, spices and coconut milk. The first time I was served a bowl of tom yam, I was prodded by my hosts but after taking a spoonful, I needed no one to convince me. Rice is also a major ingredient in Thai cuisine and that is not too surprising considering the fact that Thailand is the largest producer of rice in the world! Rice-based dishes include khanom chin, kuai-tiao rat na and paeng khao chao. The variety of Thai foods is simply mind-blowing.

Drinking

In Thailand, there is more than enough to drink. You can ‘wash’ your meal down with a cup of cha yen, a local tea or a chilled bottle of the popular Singha beer. Coffee and rice wine (called satho) are also quite popular in the country.

Places to Visit

For me, the most vibrant place to visit in the country is the Chao Phraya Delta as this is where you will see Thai culture at its best. Here, you will see some of the largest rice paddies in the world. There are various Buddhist temples and architectural wonders in the capital city of Bangkok that you must see.

Sports

By far, the most popular sports in the country is muay Thai which is a special kind of martial arts. Apart from this traditional (and national) sports, other popular sports in the country include golf, football and rugby. Thailand has some of the very best golf courses in Asia.

Interesting Facts
  •  King Bhumibol Adulyadej of Thailand is the longest reigning king in the world.
  • Almost all Thais are Buddhists.
  • The resort of Phuket is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world.
  • Thailand is currently ruled by her first female prime minister, Yingluck Shinawatra.
