The Country

Belgium is located in Western Europe and borders with France, Luxembourg and the Netherlands. It is as famous for its medieval castles, gothic cathedrals and Art as it is for being diamond, chocolate and beer capital of Europe. It is multicultural and multilingual with French, German, Dutch and English spoken by most. Brussels is a capital of Belgium as well as of European Union and Headquarters of the NATO.

Activities:

Art

To me, the greatest treasure of Belgium is located at the Cathedral of St. Bavo in Ghent.  It is a polyptych by Jan van Eyck called “Ghent Altarpiece”.  It was started sometime before 1426 and was completed in approximately 1432 by Jan and his brother Hubert.  There is much speculation if it was acollaborative effort, but it became irrelevant to me as I got lost in 6 years of brushstrokes to produce this magnificent altarpiece.

Beer

Belgians take their beer seriously and there are 100 plus breweries producing over 300 varieties of the most distinct beers.  There are many to enjoy, some are corked like champagne, and others need to mature in a bottle for up to 6 years.  My favorite is Lambic with its unique flavor, sparkle and fruit flavor induced by the second fermentation.  There is truly nothing like wondering windings streets of Bruges until finally landing at a café for a few of them.

It is then hardly surprising that in addition to museums of fine arts, musical instruments, and comic books, Brussels boasts the Brewery Museum on the famous Grand Place, housed in a 16th century brewer's guild hall.

Chocolate

It is noteworthy for chocolate addicts like me that Belgium’s annual production of chocolates is at 220,000 tons.  The National Airport in Brussels is the world’s biggest selling point of chocolates.  On average, a Belgian citizen consumes about 61 grams of chocolate per day or 22 kilograms of chocolate per year.
